TZRK is a longstanding partner. We previously built a reliable Wi‑Fi network connecting mobile equipment in the open-pit mine, enabling effective dispatch and telemetry collection. Our next task was larger in scope.
Requirements
The project required upgrading the communications infrastructure and laying fiber-optic backbone lines directly across the operating mine, alongside its roads. The cables were to be installed on existing overhead power line poles. Alongside Yakutia’s harsh climate, the project involved strict safety requirements for working at height and near high-voltage lines.
Implementation challenges
- Stringent electrical safety requirements. Work took place within the protected corridor of an operating power line at approximately 5 kV. The power cable was positioned above, and we secured our fiber-optic cable below it, strictly observing all required clearances. All personnel hold the highest electrical safety qualification, Group V, permitting work on and near electrical installations of any voltage without de-energization.
- The climate challenge. Construction took place in March, when daytime temperatures in Yakutia ranged from −10 to −20 °C. Despite the cold, work continued and all deadlines were met.
Solution
Our crews, holding the required authorizations, completed the full scope of fiber-optic backbone construction:
- Route design and fiber-optic cable installation alongside mine roads.
- Installation on power line poles in compliance with safety requirements, with the power line operating at approximately 5 kV.
- Construction, installation and commissioning of the fiber-optic network.
Customer outcome
- The high-speed fiber-optic backbone has been built and is ready for operation.
- Work was completed within a tight schedule at temperatures as low as −20 °C.
- The customer confirmed that all requirements had been met, with no outstanding comments.
