Production sites

IT solutions for industrial enterprises

Communication networks for production sites: reliable access for employees, equipment and applications in the complex RF environment.

Production site networkWorkshops, warehouses and administrative areas are connected to the core and application systems.

Client devices and equipment → access → IT/OT segments → applications

Network designed for production

We design a network that connects employees, equipment and production applications. MES, ICS and IIoT remain customer systems; Connectum ensures their network transport and integration.

  • The radio model takes into account the geometry and materials of the site
  • Critical applications are included in the source data
  • IT/OT and service boundaries are defined in the design

Types of sites and roles

Zones of one enterprise require different network modes

A coordinated architecture accommodates different RF environments and access rules, with settings tailored to each area.

01

Production workshop

Metal, lines and mechanisms change signal propagation and channel availability.

02

Warehouse and internal logistics

Handheld terminals, forklifts and WMS-dependent processes are checked on the routes.

03

Outdoor area

Outdoor areas require assessment of mounting heights, antennas, backhaul, and equipment protection.

04

Administrative buildings

Corporate and guest segments are linked to the general access policy.

05

Moving equipment

AGVs, cranes, forklifts, and terminals require separate checks of the client device and application.

Processes and requirements

How infrastructure supports production

First, the influence of the network on the process is documented, then technologies and equipment are selected.

ProcessWhat depends on the infrastructureThe main riskWhat we document in the project
Mobile workstationsAccess to tasks, instructions, and production recording systemsReconnection and DelayClients, zones, load and session criteria
Handheld terminals and warehouse operationsExchange with WMS and confirmation of transactionsCoverage gaps between racksRoute tests and application scenario
AGV and forklift trucksConnection of terminal or controller in motionRoaming, antenna performance, and vehicle speedClient, route, channels and allowable losses

Video and voiceReal-time trafficOverload and unpredictable delayTraffic profiles, priorities and acceptance

The set of applications and acceptance criteria are approved by the owners of the technological process and operation.

Priority workflows

Scenarios from the workplace to the moving machine

Scenarios are divided by client, application and allowable impact of losses.

01

Workshop and mobile staff

Coverage, capacity and segmentation are tested on real working devices.

02

Internal logistics

Handheld terminals and forklift routes are associated with WMS-dependent operations.

03

Equipment in motion

The onboard terminal is tested with antenna, power and application at operating speed.

04

Modernization without stopping

Changes are divided into controlled stages with work windows and rollback plan.

Reference architecture

Six levels of production network

The reference model separates the client layer, transport, management and applications.

01

Clients and equipment

Handheld terminals, laptops, terminals, cameras and industrial controllers.

02

Radio access

Access points and industrial client devices selected for the site environment.

03

Transport

Switching, wireless bridges and fiber-optic communication lines between zones.

04

IT/OT segmentation

Access policies, environments and interconnections.

05

Management and monitoring

Configurations, events, metrics and change log.

06

Applications

WMS, MES, voice, video and IIoT systems of the customer or partner.

Deployment program

From site assessment to operational handover

We adapt the scope and checkpoints to the site, access arrangements, and permitted work windows.

  1. 01

    Diagnostics and project inputs

Plans, materials, process areas, client devices, and critical applications.

  2. 02

    Survey and prioritization

Measurements in working conditions and verification of interference, heights and routes.

  3. 03

    Project or pilot

An RF model or a pilot of a critical workflow under actual site conditions rather than a substitute laboratory test.

  4. 04

    Deployment and acceptance

Phased deployment and acceptance using actual operating devices.

  5. 05

    Operational handover

Documentation, configuration management and maintenance regulations.

Operational framework

Manageability is more important than nominal coverage

Acceptance is based on agreed application requirements, and performance must remain reproducible after changes.

01

IT/OT segmentation

Roles, traffic directions and boundaries of responsibility are documented.

02

Configuration management

Version control, backups, and change procedures reduce the risk of unnoticed configuration drift.

03

Application-level acceptance testing

Check the working device and application, not just the RSSI on the measuring adapter.

Questions before the start

Frequently asked questions about the production network

These answers help define requirements, scope, and the appropriate first project stage.

01Can a workshop network be designed from plans alone?

The plan is useful for the preliminary model, but materials, equipment, interference, and real geometry often require a field survey.

02Does Connectum implement MES or industrial control systems?

MES, ICS and IIoT remain customer systems; Connectum ensures their network transport and integration.

03How is AGV or forklift connectivity tested?

Tests require the actual client device, antenna, route, vehicle speed, traffic profile, and agreed packet loss or latency limits.

04How are IT and OT separated?

The segmentation model is determined by security requirements, system owners and acceptable interaction directions.

05Can the network be modernized without stopping production?

Yes, where work windows, temporary network arrangements, migration stages, verification checks, and rollback are agreed.

06Where to start with complaints about the existing network?

With audit of symptoms, configurations, logs and client scenarios; purchasing equipment prior to diagnosis may not eliminate the cause.

Analysis of the site

Assess network performance against the production process

Send plans, area descriptions, client devices and applications, work windows, and known restrictions. We will define the scope of the survey or design.

An engineer will review the project inputs before we respond.
